How to Prevent Backlash on a Baitcaste

图片
What is backlash & why do baitcasters suffer from it? Backlash happens when the lure slows down after casting, but the spool does not—resulting in a tangled mess of line, also known as a “bird's nest.” It usually happens when you don’t have the spool and brake system set properly, it can happen if you aren’t using the right rod, and it can happen if you are not using the right line and lures. The bottom line is that backlash with baitcasting rods is a mess that you absolutely want to avoid. How to prevent backlash on your casting reel? Backlash is what usually discourages people from using a baitcasting reel. However, there are many advantages to using a baitcaster rather than a spinning reel—such as allowing for more precision and control, giving you a more accurate cast. Then we will tell you a few ways to help prevent, or lessen backlash. 1. Choose the right (not expensive) equipment When just starting, you want to choose the right...

THRIFT ALL THE WAY ON CHAMPLAIN

图片
July 20, 2019  by Jody White Taking the win in wire-to-wire fashion, FLW Tour pro Bryan Thrift tallied 18 pounds, 4 ounces on the final day for an even 57-pound total in the Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on Lake Champlain. For the win, Thrift earned $44,200 and a new Ranger boat, and it’s his 11th win with FLW. The Northern Division is presented by Gajo Baits and the tournament was presented by Polaris.  Complete results Winning co-angler pattern  Historically, Thrift has been stellar throughout the south in his home state of North Carolina, Arkansas, along the Tennessee River and everywhere else. He hasn’t, however, really kept up his typical pace in the north country. After the last few weeks on Champlain, it’s safe to put that trend to bed. “I’m not going to say it’s been my nemesis, but I’ve never really got in a groove on this lake until 2016 when we came for the Tour and I tied for 10th and ended up 11th,” says Thrift. “It was...

CHAMPLAIN MIDDAY UPDATE – DAY 1

图片
CHAMPLAIN MIDDAY UPDATE – DAY 1 July 18, 2019  by Jody White Takeoff was a little blustery, but overall, it’s been a perfect start to the Costa FLW Series event on Lake Champlain. The event is the kickoff of the Northern Division, which is presented by Gajo Baits, and the tournament itself is presented by Polaris. Morning story  Though it was choppy up north until about 8:30 a.m. or so, the pros running down to Ticonderoga for largemouths didn’t have too hard a time of it. The first few anglers made it past Crown Point at 6:57 a.m., proving that the chop up north wasn’t spread too far down the lake. Up north, it’s been mostly sunny and the wind has been very manageable. Due to a camera malfunction, we don’t have any updates from the more smallmouth-centric part of the lake, but one of our crew members started down at Ti to keep an eye on the largemouth action. We found Brett Carnright pretty early in the morning and he struck out on his first s...

MCCAGHREN READY FOR HAMILTON

图片
Billy McCaghren July 16, 2019  by David A. Brown Billy McCaghren spends a lot of his free time coaching 8- to 10-year-old boys on how to swing and catch; but when the FLW Cup visits Hot Springs August 9-11, the Arkansas pro is hopeful that some of his young baseball players will be able to swing by and see the Lake Hamilton bass he plans on catching. The third-year FLW Tour pro from Mayflower, Ark. lives about 70 miles from Hot Springs with his wife Norma and 8-year-old son Callen. While not exactly a hometown boy, it’s close enough for McCaghren to expect a lot of familiar faces. “It’s going to mean a lot because a lot of my family and friends will be here,” he says. “I have a lot of friends down here who’ve known me my whole life. “Hopefully, a lot of my players are going to get to come down. That’s a big deal for me personally.” FLW Cup details  BALANCING LIFE With nine top-10s in FLW competition, including a sixth-place showing at the Tour event on...

PETER T AND CREW WIN ICAST CUP

图片
Representing Lew’s, the team of John Carman, Peter Thliveros and Matthew Mattingly won the 2019 ICAST Cup at Lake Toho this morning with a five-bass limit that weighed 20 pounds, 4 ounces. It’s the first time in the ICAST kickoff event’s five-year history that a team has won two titles, and they come back-to-back – though this time it was an outright win.  Last year, Peter T and his teammates from Pitman Creek Wholesale were crowned co-champions after Thliveros, a former FLW Tour pro, declined the offer of a footrace tiebreaker with the Co-Anglers.com crew when both teams caught 22-2.  “As soon as someone mentioned running I started getting out of breath,” he says. Luckily, this year there was no need to break any ties, as the Lew’s team won by a margin of 7 ounces over Team Cox Juice, which was comprised of FLW Tour pro John Cox, Keith Carson, Hunter Shyrock and Brian Stockl.  The charity tournament, which helps raise money to support  Keep America...
